The Environment

For over a century, the rivers in Deschutes County have been altered and used for commercial purposes, without much consideration for the rivers’ health or the fish and plant life. Fish habitat has been degraded and riparian areas removed or damaged. Unfortunately, these activities have diminished the rivers’ health and consequently made them less attractive for recreation. In recent years, these concerns have drawn the attention of Central Oregon citizens, and much is being done to restore the rivers and the surrounding habitat. In addition to fulfilling our responsibility as stewards of the environment, improving the aesthetic experience on the rivers will benefit everyone. With the rapid population growth in Central Oregon, more pressure is being placed on our water supplies. It is important to maintain a sensible balance between our water use and the rivers’ well-being.of the rivers. This is not just an environmental concern, but also an economic issue.
